International families often want childcare that fits their language and their working lives. The old directory sorted these services into five groups, which this page explains.
Crèches and daycare centres
Care for the youngest children is offered by crèches and daycare centres. A few international toddler schools combine early care with a kindergarten programme. Places are limited, so enquire early. See the overview of childcare, kindergarten and school.
Kindergartens
Kindergartens for ages three to six include bilingual and international options, such as English-German, Spanish-German and Montessori-style settings. Some are linked to international schools in the Westend and in Bad Homburg. The directory also mentioned a centralised kindergarten platform for registering interest in Frankfurt.
Schools
International and bilingual schools exist alongside state schools. The German system leads from primary school at about six to the secondary track, as explained in the childcare, kindergarten and school overview.
Nannies and agencies
Families who prefer care at home can look at nanny agencies or independent nannies. Check references, work permits and insurance arrangements.
Babysitters
Babysitters, including recommended sitters shared among parents in a social media group, help with evenings out. Meet a new sitter before leaving your child, and check how they would handle an emergency.
Choosing sensibly
Visit more than one setting, ask about group sizes and staff qualifications, and see how children are treated. No directory listing is an endorsement.
