Parks in Frankfurt for Families with Young Children

Frankfurt has more green space than many visitors expect, and parks are a mainstay of life with a baby or toddler. The old directory listed the parks below as family-friendly. Opening times, facilities and seasonal rules vary, so check the city’s website before a long trip.

City-centre and inner parks

  • Bethmannpark in the Ostend area, known for its Chinese garden.
  • Grüneburg Park and Holzhausen Park in the Westend and Nordend, popular for picnics and open lawns.
  • Günthersburgpark in the Nordend, which also has a playground and a summer water-play area.
  • Rothschildpark and the Palmengarten, the latter a large botanical garden that families often use for a day out.

Riverside and suburban parks

  • Niddapark, a long green corridor along the river Nidda.
  • Stadtpark Höchst in the west of the city.
  • Elli-Lucht-Park in Niederrad, with a playground that includes baby swings.
  • Lohrpark, on the Lohrberg hill in Seckbach.

Forest play parks

Frankfurt’s municipal forest holds several “Waldspielparks”, which are play areas set among the trees. Those named in the directory include Carl-von-Weinberg, Goetheturm, Heinrich-Kraft-Park, Louisa, Scheerwald, Schwanheim and Tannenwald. They are ideal when the weather is warm and you want shade.

Water play in summer

Several parks and playgrounds feature splash areas during the warmer months, including the one by the Untermainbrücke and in Günthersburgpark. Bring spare clothes and sun protection.

Park tips

  1. Pack drinks and snacks, since not every park has a kiosk.
  2. Take a pram or sling suited to paths that may be gravelled.
  3. Follow posted rules about dogs, barbecues and ball games.
